Welcome to Sixth Grade
Hi 6th Grade Families,
Just a few comments about homework and absences:
We do not assign daily homework. If students do not finish class assignments they have time once a week to catch up during Learning Lab. Homework will only be given if a student is falling behind and needs to finish at home.
If you student is absent for more than three (3) days, they should log into their Google Classrooms and try to do some of the assignments posted there. Students can always check BuzzMath for Math assignments, and Lexia for ELA assignments.
Also keep in mind that with Fall comes changes in the weather from day to day. Please remind your student to bring an extra layer of clothing for recess, as it could be colder than they were expecting.
Welcome to Sixth Grade. Let's have a great year!

English Language Arts
Currently we are focusing on Narratives in ELA. Students are doing lots of reading, watching some short clips of relevant videos, reading their "just right" books and writing in their reading journal as they work on their language skills.
Our end goal is for students to write their own narrative story!
Our current area of focus is the Age of Exploration. We are beginning with learning about the Indigenous Peoples, their way of life and what our continent was life before the explorers came and how this age affected Native Americans. We will then move into learning about the explorers, the American colonies and the American Revolution.
We use a lot of informational texts and practice using these texts to answer questions.
This year we are enjoying having our Math Interventionist, Erin Oliver, in class with us each day.
In Trimester 1 we are focusing on Ratios and Proportions.
Ms Oliver and I are also working together during WIN time
Our Big Idea for this Trimester: What is contributing to the rise in global temperatures?
We are learning about the atmosphere, ozone layer, clouds, etc. Students receive their classroom assignments on Monday and get to choose what they work on when, submitting all work by Friday.
We will work on a series of projects. Ask your student how it is going!

Looking Ahead To Next Year
Sixth Grade is the last year of education within the walls of CIUUSD-Grand Isle School. For Seventh Grade, students and their families will choose to attend a middle school in a neighboring county. We encourage families to research which school is the best fit for them. The Grand Isle Supervisory Union has prepared a document to help in this process:
